Myopia / short-sightedness

Ideally in an eye, cornea, lens, retina and length of the ocular globe, the eye-ball, are perfectly coordinated so that a clear image can be produced on the surface of the retina. But more than half of Germany´s population suffer from some kind of defective vision e.g. myopia or short-sightedness. These eyes are basically healthy which because of a “construction default” cannot gain optimal vision. A life without glasses can be achieved through minimal invasive correction of myopia with modern laser treatments.

What causes myopia?

When the eyeball is too long.

With myopia, objects at close distance appear clearly, and on the other hand at far distance they appear blurred. The reason for this is that incident light rays are focussed not directly on the surface of the retina but before it since the eye-ball is too long. The longer the eye-ball the weaker the eye sight - that is the person is short-sighted and distant objects appear blurred.

The extent of myopia is indicated in dioptres with a minus sign. The higher the number the greater the myopia.

Short-sightedness
Normal vision

Normal vision: focus on the retina
Cornea, lens, retina and length of the eye-ball are precisely coordinated so that a clear image can be produced directly on the surface of the retina.

Short-sightedness

Short-sightedness: focus in front of the retina
The eye-ball is too long. Incoming light rays are not focussed on the retina but in front of it. Distant objects appear blurred.

How to treat short-sightedness?

Treatments for a life without glasses

For the correction of myopia there are surgical possibilities within the cornea (cornea resp. Laser treatment) and the eye lens ( lens treatment):

With the laser treatment, tissue of the cornea is eliminated in order to compensate the length of the eye-ball. This requires a certain thickness and stability of the cornea.

With the lens treatments, an artificial lens is inserted in order to alter the refraction behaviour. Lens treatments allow the compensation of very substantial visual defects as there is no limitation regarding the removing of corneal tissue.

Depending on the kind of visual defect, there are several treatment possibilities:

Which treatment is suitable for me?

Eyes differ. Depending on the state of the eye and the type of myopia there are different methods. Today in 80% of laser treatments the SMILE method is applied. It is the eye laser method of the new generation compared to the classic LASIK or even Femto- LASIK methods it works without a flap.

Which method is best for you can only be determined after extensive preliminary examination and personal consultations with one of our Smile Eyes experts. So call us and make an appointment!

In principle the following treatment methods can be used for correcting myopia:

Eye laser
SMILE

Myopia up to -10,0 dpt.

Corneal curvature
up to 5,0 dpt.

FEMTO-LASIK

Myopia up to -10,0 dpt.

Corneal curvature
up to 5,0 dpt.

LASEK

Myopia up to -6,0 dpt.

Corneal curvature
up to 5,0 dpt.

Refractive lens surgery

With refractive lens surgery, there are no strict limits regarding the number of dioptres. What are important are the individual eye structure and the patient´s age.
