Laser treatment for eyes - introduction
Since 1997, the ophthalmologists working at the Smile Eyes eye clinic are primarily working in surgical sight correction; as a consequence they can rely on their personal experience that is based on more than 25 000 surgical refractive interventions. The history of refractive laser surgery for eyes starts as early as 1983 with the development of the Excimer laser. As from 1986, the first laser treatment for eyes using the PRK method (photorefractive keratectomy) was available. LASIK represents a later development of this original method of laser treatment for eyes and has become widespread since the early 1990s. Since 1999, the so-called LASEK-Methode is furthermore available as an alternative treatment for patients to whom the LASIK method may not apply.
The new Femto-LASIK surgical method was first applied in Germany in 2004, and now this method is proposed by the Smile Eyes clinics as well as the newest technique, named the ReLEx®-Methode.
